This picture scares me a little. According to babycenter.com I should have gained about 10 pounds so far. Um, I had gained 8 by four months. For some reason, I don't think this is only two pounds from the last picture! I am thinking about hiding my eyes and not finding out my weight. Has anyone ever done that? I mean I really don't want to know anyway. That is certainly not the fun part! He sure is kicking a lot! My five-year-old even felt a kick once!

Multiple Birth Awareness Month
First, We are going to write an article for our State magazine (SAGA) on MBA with some ideas on how local clubs in our state can participate and celebrate. We are also going to send this article out in advance to each local club's state rep and president in our monthly email newsletter beginning in Feb with additional information on what how other clubs are participating from around the country. And we will be building a box on our website (IOMOTC.org) that will highlight MBA and local clubs' efforts throughout the next few months. Second, we are going to tie our annual Spring Workshop (kind of a mini convention), "Staying Alive in 2009-We will Survive" and the MBA together. This was held on April 18th. I know these Mothers of Twins have some great ideas on where to get the best deals for clothing, shoes, etc. I am sure they have some other great tips too. Here's the link to the local chapter in case you want to get involved: www.PeoriaMothersOfTwins.org -NewsAnchorMom Jen The Peoria Mothers of Twins group sent me an email saying April is multiple birth awareness month!
Here are links to the National, Illinois and Peoria Chapters of Mothers of Twins!

Things for kids to do!
If you live in the Peoria area, there is a great local website that now has a list of kid activities! I don't know about you, but I am constantly going, "Where was that swim class? Don't they offer horseback riding somewhere in town for kids?" People tell me about these great little things their kids do and I can never seem to remember the name of the place, much less the phone number!
I met the owner of www. ExplorePeoria.com, Amy Blain, and she offered to organize a list of things like swimming classes, horseback riding, kids theater, etc. I am thrilled! She seems very open to adding other local events/programs. So if you have an idea, let me know and I will see what I can do!
When you get a chance, check out the kids page of Explore Peoria.

Toddler with a Hangover
This is what happens when a 2-year-old is stubborn. He refuses to get back in his crib now that he has learned how to crawl out. So we find him in the strangest places in the morning! I couldn't resist sharing this one! Hah!

Fast Food banned near Schools
Childhood obesity.
The restaurant in Leytonstone, in East London, was accused of breaking new rules which ban hot food outlets near schools, parks or playgrounds. The ban also covers take-out restaurants that are within 300 yards of each other and puts a limit on total numbers of restaurants in the center of town.
The town council says they had to implement the ban to fight childhood obesity and because too many fast food joints were popping up around the community. One million British youth are expected to be obese by 2010.
Clyde Loakes from the Town Council said, "They wanted us to do something. they wanted us to specifically to say enough is enough, close these places down, come up with some policies
that will enable you to do that, and that's what we've done. we're not going to tolerate them near schools, parks, playgrounds, youth centers, for a whole range of issues, not least because we're really concerned around obesity and our young people."

Kids who eat mercury-rich fish
I have been doing my best to avoid fish this pregnancy. I really don't need it and I don't like the thought of ANY mercury going to a growing baby. However, I did finish my son's tuna melt one day and I think I had a tuna sandwich from Subway once. Subway told me they use the cheap tuna, not albacore. So, I think I am probably being a little too careful, but fish is not routinely tested for mercury so I don't think anyone really knows how much is in there. It could be a lot higher than the average amount. Chicken grosses me out when I am pregnant. I have no idea why. It's just one of those things. So my protein is coming from ground turkey, beans and nuts.
heart. but fish also contain mercury.
Jackie Kaminer is buying fish for dinner. although she knows it's full of nutrients, she's careful not to serve too much. "I'm concerned about the mercury levels in the fish and what that can do to your body."

No More Cheeseburgers!
My son: "What is a hamburger anyway?"
Mom:"It's a cow."
Son:"What do you mean?"
Mom:"It's the insides of a cow."
Son:"That's disgusting. What about a cheeseburger?"
Mom:"It's the insides of a cow with cheese on top."
Son:"Oh. I don't think I want to go to McDonald's anymore."
Mom:"Hah, maybe just to play?"
Son:"Yah, just to play. Can you pack me peanut butter and jelly? Is that the insides of something?"
Mom:"No,honey."
From ABC: More kids are deciding to become vegetarians even though their parents eat meat. Are they making healthy choices or missing out on important nutrients? It depends on the family. You can have a healthy vegetarian diet and an unhealthy vegetarian diet.
A recent survey by the Centers for Disease Control found that one out of every 200 American children younger than age 18 is a vegetarian. Like Sarah and Elijah, many of them are not from vegetarian families -- and that can set up a food war between parent and child.
For example, Alana McBane, 10, has wanted to stop eating meat for the past two years. But she is allergic to nuts, tofu and eggs, so her parents are unwilling to allow an all-vegetarian diet.
"It's really hard, because I don't want to [eat meat]," McBane said. "But my dad's like, 'No, you have all these allergies. You have to eat meat.'"
"The explanation is that, because she's in her growing years," said Alana's father, Scott McBane, "and we really do need protein during these years especially. ... It is really important, until she finishes growing, that she get good protein."
Healthy or Not?
Even when parents do allow a child to go vegetarian, there still can be battles over what is or is not healthy.
"Vegetarianism, as a concept, I completely embrace," Jessica Baccus said. "But there have been a few go-rounds where we felt like [Elijah] just was eating toast. So we had to get more insistent."
"If they had their way, they would survive on a couple of vegetables and a lot of carbohydrates," Bill Baccus added. "It's like butter, bread, pasta with butter."
Dr. Russell Greenfield, author of the book, "Healthy Child, Whole Child," said parents of vegetarian kids should be most concerned about making sure their children are getting enough protein and eating enough food overall.
"Usually, vegetarian diets are a little bit high in fiber, and that can get kids really full very easily, so we need to make certain that we balance that out so they get adequate calories," Greenfield said.
He also advises parents to consider giving vegetarian children multivitamins or other supplements to make up for nutrients like iron, calcium, zinc and vitamins D and B-12, which can be low in vegetarian diets.
Keeping the Peace
When it comes to keeping the peace between vegetarian kids and meat-eating grown-ups, a compromise can go a long way.
For the McBanes, that meant setting aside one day per week when no one eats meat. They call it, "meatless Monday."
"It's been a big hit," Scott McBane said. "The kids are reminding us hours before dinner, 'You know, it's meatless Monday.'"
"It's my favorite day of the week," Alana McBane said.
Do any of you have kids who don't eat meat?
