Bouncy House Danger

I saw a story yesterday about bouncy houses flying away with kids in them. One girl ended up on top of a house with a concussion. I didn't realize the wind could pick these things up if it's strong enough. All the bouncy houses in the story I saw were tethered to the ground. Good grief! It was upsetting to see. Here's the video from ABC:

And then I saw this story today!
FROM NBC: Eight elementary school children in Illinois were rushed to the hospital after an inflatable slide they were on tipped over.

Officials say several children were on the 15-foot tall inflatable slide when it tipped over Friday.
Eight fifth-graders were taken to an area hospital, but none of their injuries appear to be serious.
Authorities are trying determine why the slide collapsed.

I am not against bouncy houses and I will continue to let my kids use them. We had one for my son's birthday last year and it was fabulous! However, if it's a windy day, they won't be anywhere near the thing!

The Halo Sleep Sack

I did not have one of these for my kids, but I like it. I totally think I would have used it. Granted, it's in the 90s this week, so I am not sure if a baby could even stand to have a breathable blanket right now! However, I like the idea. Has anyone used one of these? Do they wrap tighter than when you just use a regular blanket?

FROM NBC: New moms can worry about one less thing at a North Texas Hospital. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome strikes newborn babies without warning. "SIDS" is the leading cause of death in babies younger than a year. 25-hundred babies die each year.

Texas Health Plano is promoting a new sleep safe program. Ryan Mcelroy, Pediatrician: "SIDS is the number one cause of death in kids under 12 months of age, so they found that back sleeping is the number one thing parents can do to help prevent SIDS."

Doctor Ryan Mcelroy says the exact cause of SIDS is still unknown, but cases dropped over 50-percent nationwide when doctors began suggesting babies sleep on their back. To help promote that, the hospital began teaching parents to swaddle their babies. Some parents say it can be difficult.

Lauren Davis/New Mom: "Well, especially with your first baby it's all so new to you, you have all these blankets and you're trying to fold it correctly and it ends up around their face." That's why the hospital began carrying the Halo Sleep Sack.
Dr. Ryan Mcelroy/ pediatrician: "They came up with these sleep sacks awhile back and what they are, are these wearable blankets.

They zip up in the front and the baby sleeps in this almost like a sleeping bag." Mcelroy says they're lightweight, so they keep the baby from overheating. And Lauren says they're a lot easier than the old way-which is always a plus for a new mom.

Warning about teething medication

Fortunately for my kids, I was never organized enough to find the Orajel at our house or to continually apply it to the gums every few hours. I just let the kids chew on non-toxic toys for their teething and that seemed to work for them. I don't remember posting about this when the information came out last month, so I wanted to make sure you are aware the FDA is warning parents against using some teething medications if they contain benzocaine. Some of the brand names are Anbesol, Hurricaine, Orajel, Baby Orajel, and Orabase. Benzocaine can cause a life-threatening reduction in oxygen called methemoglobinemia. You can find more information on WebMD. The main thing to remember is not to use teething solutions or sprays on your kids. And I did get an email from a law firm representing parents who think their kids were injured by one of these teething medications. I cam email it to you if you are interested.

Plus-sized Kids are Big Business

I hate that the childhood obesity epidemic is growing, but I am glad the kids will at least be able to wear the same clothes as kids who aren't overweight. I am sure it's hard enough for a child to be obese in school. It certainly doesn't help stop the obesity epidemic, but manufacturers only make what people will buy, so I don't think they should be punished. Have you noticed more husky clothes at stores? Which ones?

FROM NBC: We all know America's waistlines are expanding, that includes even the youngest set and that really is turning out to be quite a business opportunity. There's a growing market for plus-sized apparel for kids. They are signs of the times: husky boys, girls plus.

Linda Peeples/JcPenney: "The parents are really relieved to come here and buy their kids the same styles, the same everything
Linda Peeples manages this section at JC Penney at a mall and says a lot of families are thrilled to find it. Linda Peeples/JC Penney: "And you are trying to figure out something to fit this kid you know so she can be in style and won't be picked on in school so I think that's pretty much the reason they brought in the plus size." "

So, uh, for me it works because I couldn't find any like children's clothes for her. I had to get a bigger size actually just because she is a big girl."
The retailer says it's offered plus sizes for kids for some time, but now it is considered one of the most promising markets in the fashion world. The retailer says it's offered plus sizes for kids for some time. but now, it's considered one of the most promising markets in the fashion world.

Pam Hensley/JC Penney: "The consumer is the one who drive this business. They came in they asked for it." Makes sense, when you consider that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years.

For example... for kids ages 6 to 11... obesity increased from 6.5% to 19.6% between 1980 and 2008. And according to Forbes and Market Research.com: Sales of women's and girls' plus size apparel has become a $47 billion dollar industry. Lands End and Sears also now offer plus sizes for kids.

Cell phones and cancer

I am posting this story for two reasons:
1. Obviously we want to keep ourselves healthy and happy in order to take good care of our children and to live long enough to see our grandchildren.

2. Kids are getting cell phones at younger and younger ages. If their brains are still developing and they are putting something that can cause can cause cancer on their head.. that can't be a good combination.

FROM NBC: The World Health Organization said today cell phones could cause cancer. The group's cancer agency has reviewed evidence and says an increased risk of a malignant type of brain cancer cannot be ruled out.
The World Health Organization is labeling cell phones as "possibly carcinogenic." At the same time it said a link has not been clearly established that cell phones do cause cancer in humans. Cell phones are in the same category as dry cleaning chemicals and pesticides, according to the WHO. A group of 31 experts reviewed studies on the health effects of radio-frequency magnetic fields which are emitted by cell phones.
