No Peanut Butter Crackers Right Now

From ABC: A popular snack food is being pulled from stores. Millions of peanut- butter crackers are being taken off the shelves in connection with a nationwide salmonella outbreak. The crackers are made by Kellogg's, and sold under the Austin and Keebler brands.

There is no evidence the crackers have made anyone sick, but Kellogg's buys bulk peanut butter from the supplier that is linked to the salmonella outbreak - and the company doesn't want to take any chances.

This outbreak, which began back in September, has now caused more than 430 illnesses in 43 states. Five people have died. The suspect peanut butter is NOT the kind you find in your cabinet at home. It is bulk peanut butter sold to schools, nursing homes, restaurants, and food companies like Kellogg's. So, if you have it, don't eat it.

I have two packs of these crackers at home. Yikes! None of us have gotten sick from them though.

Vicks Vapor Rub Danger

OOOOOOOOh I wondered about this and never looked into it. I do not tend to use Vicks on my kids because of the strong smell, but some people swear by it. I have always heard any chemical with a strong smell is a bad idea to be around for prolonged periods of time.

FROM ABC: When four-year-old Kiera and two-year-old Finn get a cold, their grandmother Melon Regis follows the same advice she has for years. She's especially heeding that warning now that there's new research out about the popular menthol compound Vicks and Vicks Vapor Rub.

Dr. David Nelson, the chair for the Department of Pediatrics at Georgetown University Hospital says it may do more harm than good. According to the research, the ingredients in Vicks can be irritants. The study found that Vicks Vapor Rub may actually stimulate mucus production and cause airway inflammation. That could lead to detrimental side effects in infants and small children.

The label suggests consulting a doctor before using it on children under the age of two years. For Melon Regis and her two grandchildren, that's exactly what she plans to do.

Have you ever used Vick's Vapor Rub on your kids?

Child With Autism Arrested!

Shocking! I am hoping this school can rethink their plan and gear it toward the situation involving that particular kid instead of some generic "rule."

FROM ABC: An Idaho mom was left outraged when school officials ordered her autistic 8-
year-old daughter handcuffed and taken from the school in a police car.

Outside her Ponderay home, 8-year-old Evelyn Towry, in her pink boots and
favorite sweatshirt explains why she's now suspended from school.

(Evelyn) "Because I was trying to leave and they hold me down." Evelyn is a third grader at Kootenai Elementary and has Asperger's Syndrome, a high functioning form of Autism. On Friday she started to act out.

(Spring) "She wanted to attend a Christmas party in her cow sweatshirt and they told her she couldn't that she would have to tuck the tail in and put ears down and she dug her heels in the way she does quite often and said she wouldn't take it off."

Spring says that when Evelyn tried to leave anyway, two teachers restrained her, which is when Evelyn began kicking, pinching and spitting on the teachers. (Evelyn) "Well, I kicked because I was upset they were holding me down and I got thumb bruises on me."

School officials then called the police and Evelyn's mom. When Spring got to school to pick her daughter up, police were already escorting Evelyn in handcuffs out of the building and into a police cruiser. Police then took her to a local juvenile detention center where she stayed for an hour, after which she was allowed to go home.

(Spring) "I was terrified and I was scared and I was hurt and I wanted to throw up. I wanted to take my baby with me." School officials responded to a request for an interview for this story by
e-mail, with the district superintendent saying they followed a specific safety plan for Evelyn which was agreed upon by the district and her mental health provider.

The plan, according to the district, says that "If a student assaults staff it is appropriate to call parents, involved support agencies, and local law enforcement officials if needed. All of the above occurred regarding this unfortunate incident." (Spring) "I never saw the plan, I never signed the plan."

On Tuesday morning the Bonner County prosecutor charged Evelyn with one count of battery. By Tuesday afternoon the charge was dropped. (Spring) "I think it's absolutely ridiculous. She doesn't even know what battery is." Spring Towry and her husband are now pursuing civil action. While they don't excuse their daughter's behavior, Spring says it didn't have to go this far.

(Spring) "I don't want this to happen to another child or another parent."

Throw away your coffee pot!

Hi Jen,

My daughter in law and I were talking last evening about food safety and plastics. She brought up a great question. Is it safe to use such things as the plastic coffee makers ( I have a white Black and Decker brand) and kettles (I also use a white Proctor Silex quick heating kettle for when I boil water for tea). The water receptacles in both products are plastic. The kettle is a #5 plastic. I could not find a number for the coffee maker. After repeatedly heating /boiling water in these products I was wondering if unsafe chemicals are leached in to the water.
Thanks for your time!! I find your web site and reports very informative!

Joan

I think this is a very good question. I have been reading and posting about the dangers of plastics since this blog launched last January. So I found Professor Frederick Vom Saal-a biology professor at the University of Missouri and a leading expert on the harmful biological effects of bisphenol A. He says his research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and he gets no money from any of the companies who are trying to come up with "safer" chemicals to be used in plastics.

When I asked Professor Vom Saal whether we could be drinking the harmful chemical bisphenol A(BPA) every morning in our cup of coffee, he shocked me by saying absolutely you are! He said coffee is a double whammy and there are more chemicals than just bisphenol A to be worried about. He said the combination of acidity and heated plastic is, "a bad thing. You don't want to do that with poly carbonate. The hotter it is, the more it breaks down." Is there any safe way to drink coffee? He said not unless you can find a coffee maker made of glass!

So my next question was about plastic in general. Should we just avoid it all together? He said there are some things to keep in mind:

1. Don't put plastic in the microwave. If you eat a frozen dinner, take the frozen food out and place it on a glass plate before heating it. Vom Saal said, "Anything in the packaging of food is going to get into your food."

2. Don't ever put plastic in the dishwasher. If it says dishwasher safe that means it has a harmful chemical in it.

3. If you have kids and want something durable, only use BPA free plastic products and don't heat them!

"What's happening is the public is essentially waking up before the regulatory system in the U.S. People are saying I don't like this. I am worried about this and rightly so. This is something that is related to heart attacks and diabetes. It's a carcinogen. When exposure occurs during early life, this is a bad chemical it should be off the market," said Vom Saal.

I wondered how these companies that make plastic could be selling something that Vom Saal says is so harmful to the public. He said plastic has been falsely advertised as durable. "That's false. That is what is going to cause the companies that make this chemical to get into a lot of trouble. Sooner or later they're going to hit the wall on this," he said.

Vom Saal is hoping the new presidential administration will create a regulatory agency to oversee food safety. He says right now food safety is controlled by several different agencies and none of them have the funding they need to do the job right. He says the Japanese industries got together and stopped making products containing BPA about 10 years ago and the U.S. is way behind on this safety issue. He wants everything used to package food to include a list of ingredients. He says right now there is no way to tell if the container that holds your soup, cereal or snacks is loaded with bisphenol A and other harmful chemicals. His research has shown those chemicals do leak into the food they are carrying, and it happens to an even greater extent when they are heated. He says plastics also contain flame retardant, which is a known neuro-toxin. Vom Saal said, "There are about 75 thousand people who get sick a year from food related illnesses 4-thousands die every year from food illnesses. There are products that contain bisphenol A in them that are used to package food. That's crazy."

So where are we right now with the safety of plastics? The Science Advisory Panel told the FDA to immediately do another report after they received mis-information a few months ago. The Panel explained the scientific evidence has been done, it just wasn't included in the original report. Vom Saal said, "The FDA said we'll think about this some time in the future."

I don't know about you, but this really opened my eyes! I do try not to use plastic plates to warm up the kid's food. However, I didn't think about the dishwasher. Duh! I am sure my family thinks I am being overly paranoid, but it won't hurt me to be more cautious about what I put in the dishwasher and microwave! Vom Saal also said as more people realize the dangers of BPA and other chemicals, the landfills will be full of this dangerous stuff. Right now, there is no solution to this problem either!

Do you have plastic plates/cups in your home? Do you eat microwavable meals?

Downy Warning

I got this email about how you shouldn't wash your kids flame retardant clothes--like jammies--with Downy. It turns out it's true. I do use downy and I certainly don't wash all the sleepwear separately. Who has time for that? So thanks Cameron for the warning!

"Not sure if this is blog-worthy or not, but I found this a little odd. While doing laundry this weekend, I was reading the Ultra Downy bottle (I don’t know why….boredom???), and it specifically says that you should NOT use it on children’s sleepwear as it decreases the flame resistance of the articles of clothing. That sounded like something up your alley."

Thanks,

Cameron
