Kids boozing it up on July 4th

It seems adults are the only ones drinking alcohol over the fourth of July. Teenagers are likely planning on boozing it up as well. If you have boys, they are the most likely to make an alcohol mistake this weekend. It might be time to have a little reminder talk with the teen.

FROM ABC: the holiday weekend is almost here, a time to celebrate the nation's birthday with parades, barbecues, fireworks and yes, booze.

A new study shows that alcohol-related visits to the emergency room more than doubles among underaged boys on the 4th of July weekend.
It's a sobering statistic. More than twice as many underage males wind up in a hospital emergency room on the 4th of July weekend due to alcohol consumption, compared to the rest of the month.

A new study from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that on the july 4th holiday weekend in 2009, an average of 942 people under the age of 21 visited the ER with alcohol-related issues. The majority of them, 622, were males. Just over a third of the e-r visits (320) were by underaged females.

Their trips to the hospital rise only slightly over the fourth of july weekend
to discourage underage drinking the study authors advise parents to discuss alcohol use with their children early and often. Getting the message across to their children now could prevent a tragedy not just this fourth of July weekend, but for any holiday.
