High Carb count and depression in Teens

This study is about teenagers, but I think I have the same tendencies and I am only a teenager at heart! I totally crave pizza, chips and french fries. I am always tired, so it seems like I am always craving carbs! The research shows there's a connection between all those carbs and a tendency to have depression. It might be something to keep in mind if you have middle/high school aged kids.

FROM ABC: Sleepy teens often means hungry teens. But in a new study presented today, authors now say what those tired high- schoolers crave the most--high carbs--can have serious implications--and not just at the waistline. Students nodding off at their desks--or climbing into bed for a late afternoon nap--is fairly common among teens--who often struggle to get enough sleep at night. most need a little more than nine hours of nightly sleep to feel alert and well-rested during the day--but it's often hard for them to log those hours.

And according to a new study, released by the associated professional sleep societies, there are serious implications. Sleep-deprived teenagers usually head straight to one food group--
carbohydrates--those french fries--pizza--and chips that have become staples of the teen-age diet. The odds of having a strong craving for carbs were significantly higher among high school seniors experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness--as was the rate of depression--when compared to students who had little or no craving.

The consequences of a carb-loaded diet can be grim. doctors worry about obesity and diabetes among young adults. And adolescents suffering from depression may be at an even greater risk--
