Cost of Parenting increases

It looks like I am in the minority this year! I can only think of a couple friends who are pregnant or just had a baby. It seemed like EVERYONE was with child when I had my now 2-year-old. I have no idea how much we spend on the boys each year, but it isn't cheap. At least they can share clothes and hopefully some sporting equipment. However, I have a feeling I will be buying food in huge bulk supplies in the coming years! I do not want the boys living with us after they turn 18 years old. Hopefully we won't be in another recession at that time!

LOS ANGELES - This year, 4.3 million babies will be born in the United States, representing a 0.4 percent decline from 2008. While recessions typically lead to fewer birth rates, the latest research from Los Angeles-based IBISWorld shows that not only does parenting get pricier with time, but the impact of current economic conditions will further exacerbate the financial commitment.

"We can expect to see a surge in the boomerang generation [ages 18-24] returning home and continuing financial dependency on parents due to a scarce and competitive job market," said Toon van Beeck, senior analyst at IBISWorld. "This phenomenon has become more apparent in recent years, with higher costs in tuition and rent making transitioning into adulthood increasingly difficult. Thanks to the recession, many parents will get prolonged time with their kids until their debt is paid off or market conditions improve."

From the moment of conception to age 18, the average cost of raising a child is about $227,862-which translates to an average cost of $12,658 a year:

Relative to average cost, however, is income level. A household yielding an annual income of less than $45,000 will spend roughly $156,469 on their child until they turn 18. Incomes between $45,000 and $75,000 spend $214,829, while households earning $75,000 and above splurge over $312,286 by the time their teen graduate's high school. Afterwards, parents can expect to shell out for college tuition, along with additional financial burdens induced by a stagnant economy.

Also relative to the total average cost spent on a child is location. For instance, those who reside in the west pay the most per child in the nation - 8.1 percent above average - due to higher income levels and cost of living. In eastern regions, such as New England, a child is 4.9 percent more expensive, whereas raising a child in the south meets closest with average figures.
Major financial considerations, such as private school, have not been factored into the average, but count as significant expenses that get even pricier for those living in urban areas. Total expenses used to calculate IBISWorld's estimate on the average total cost of raising a child include:

With housing encompassing the greatest portion (35 percent) of total expenses, expect to see adverse effects brought on by foreclosures and rising unemployment - especially in hard hit states like California and Arizona.

"We have already noticed an influx of middle-income families, particularly from California, relocating out of state in search of more affordable housing and employment opportunities," said van Beeck. "The ability for parents to afford a better quality of life for their child is of utmost importance, and it entails sacrifices."

Newer Autism Treatment

A small wellness clinic in franklin, tennessee is treating autistic children by using colon therapies. One parent says it has changed the life of her autistic son.

Mitchell Allison's been living with autism since he was almost three years old.

Mitchell's mom Julie runs an autism center in Murfreesboro. She watched Mitchell's onset of autism. And she noticed as his autism progressed... He had trouble lots of stomach
troubles... including problems using the bathroom.

Julie Allison: Mother of Autistic Child
"I had a pediatrician who specializes in autism tell me there was nothing wrong with him, and this was when he was younger, he hasn't had a bowel movement in 12 days."

Vanderbilt University Medical Center recently finished a study which shows the same gene may be responsible for both autism and gastrointestinal disorders.

Janice Doochin: In Harmony Wellness Center
"I see so many kids who have the same problems..."

And for almost 10 years Mitchell's parents took him to dozens of doctors for help... until they found in Harmony. And enrolled him in a series of colon therapy sessions with Janice Doochin.

Doochin:
"Working with him in the room, on the megan bed doing massage a lot of touch."
So now playing games even like tic tac toe are easier for Mitchell because he's more alert after going through the therapies here.

Allison:
"He can sleep now!"

Doochin is an RN who specializes in holistic therapy... She works with a handful of other autistic children like Mitchell.

Doochin:
"Patterns have changed, some independence."

And that for Julie is the best gift of all.

Allison: "it gave him his independence back."

Has anyone else heard of this connection?

Natural Child Birth

Some of you might think I am crazy, but I think this is a great idea. I had a natural birth with my first and a walking epidural with the second. I don't think I felt that much pain until I was about 5 centimeters. I went from 5 to 10 in a matter of minutes with both kids. So, I am going to check with insurance and see how the epidural is covered. If it's 80/20 I may opt out again. We'll see when the time comes. I am paying so much money to see a specialist every week right now. The total bill will be around $5,000 if everything goes well from this point. If this birthing option mentioned below was available here, I would try it. Do you think I am crazy? Has anyone else had a natural child birth?

FROM NBC: C-section rates are skyrocketing - and so are the costs for delivering a baby. Now one south Florida hospital is hoping a spa atmosphere might coax women into taking a more natural approach. Diana Gonzalez has the story. The lights are dimmed in this special labor and delivery room ... There is soothing music and pictures ... Flameless candles next to signs with encouraging messages.

The new natural birthing suite at Memorial Hospital Miramar was conceived by two nurses.
Registered Nurse Luisa Shulruff said, “ We can give them all the support that they need so that if they have the courage and if they have the will to try to have birth unmedicated that we are here for them." Sandra Droira said, “In this fast-paced world that we have today where everything has to be timed and programed, I think we are losing that allowing nature to take its course." While a growing number of expectant moms are scheduling c-sections, labor inductions, and epidurals... Eliza Pearo has signed up to give birth here without any medications.

Eliza Pearo:Expectant Mom
"Nope. I understand that it's going to be painful but I think it's natural and I'm ready to deal with it." Dr. Eric Freeling, Medical Affairs Director: "It offers the patient the ability to deliver in a natural, calm ambiance ... but also have the backup of the hospital and all of the equipment and the technology and the expertise that the hospital has to intervene if there's an emergency situation."

Operating rooms are just down the hall. So is a level two Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. But Eliza is hoping none of this will be necessary when she gives birth to Naya. Eliza Pearo: Expectant Mom "I believe in my body and I believe having a child is a natural process and when possible you shouldn't interfere with nature."

Swimmer's Ear

With temperatures soaring and heat indices topping out in the triple digits, many are flocking to swimming pools and local waterways, but this could expose you to an unwanted infection. It's that time of year again when pediatricians see a spike in the number of ear infections.

Dr. Albert Richert, Jr., Pediatrician: "Injury to the ear canal...swimming and putting things in your ear can scratch the outer ear canal here and cause some injury and swelling and infection."
Unlike an infection of the middle ear, doctor Albert Richert says swimmer's ear happens when bacteria grow in the ear canal. In that canal, there's delicate skin that is protected by a thin coating of earwax. Dr. Albert Richert, Jr., Pediatrician: "The ear wax forms a barrier that can protect the skin. It helps keep the acidity at the right level in the ear, which helps prevent bacterial growth." Many people clean their ears each day with a cotton swab, but this is actually frowned upon because you're getting rid of the "good" earwax.

Dr. Richert: "The old adage is to never place anything in your ear that's smaller than your elbow, which basically means – don't put anything in your ear." So if you or your child will be beating the heat in the water this summer, you need to take some extra steps to ensure that your ears stay healthy. Dr. Richert:"One of the best ways is actually to use a hairdryer. to blow–dry your ear, you hold the hair–dryer about 12 inches from your ear and blow warm air into your ear and that dries your ear out."

And like many professional swimmers, Dr. Richert says shaking your ears when you get out of the water also helps to keep them dry. Swimmer's ear drops can also aid in prevention, but if you are already feeling pain... it's too late!
"You can use swim ear drops to prevent the pain, but once the pain comes on, stop using those and you need to go see your doctor." Antibiotic eardrops are prescribed to treat swimmer's ear. Swimming caps can help with keeping water from entering the ear, but ear plugs are *not recommended unless they are specially fit to the person.

Luckily, we haven't dealt with this one yet. My oldest just recently decided he liked swimming under water. We are heading to the pool a lot more often these days. Now, it's just my husband and the boys since I am on bed rest. Has anyone ever dealt with swimmer's ear?

7 Months

Oh the joy of being 7 months pregnant with a 110 degree heat index! I hear this week will be cooler. On Friday I had another cervical check to see if all the contractions I am having (15-20 per day) are getting my body ready for labor way too early. My OB told me to pack a bag for the hospital before the appointment because there was a good chance I would be sent to the hospital. Yikes! So Friday was a little scary. However, everything looked good and I got to go back home. Yeah! I go back on Wednesday and will go every week until the baby is born. I will be really broke, but hopefully baby Christensen will wait another 10 weeks! Friends at work put a love seat in front of my computer at work so I could remain on pseudo-bed rest while I am there! I have to take a picture. It is funny!
