Potty Training Follow-up

Question from NewsAnchorMom.com Reader:

In March it was said, "My co-anchor's wife, Michelle, just bought the 3day potty training down loadable book. They are trying it next weekend! I will let you all know how it goes!"HOW DID IT GO?! : )

Good Question. I forgot about that book. Unfortunately, the response isn't great for the the 3Day Potty Training book, but he has another suggestion that did work--eventually.

Michelle says, "not very good." However we didn't strictly go by the book. We used some techniques from the book and it took about 2 months to get him completely trained. Making a chart and promising things like a toy or a movie after 5 successful days seemed to really do the trick.

I think it took my son a few months too. Three days would be nice, but I haven't heard from anyone who has had success with it. If you are reading this and you have had success potty training in less than a week, please let us know your method! I am getting ready to potty train my second son.

Here's the link to the original potty training blog. There are some useful suggestions from other parents.
MayoClinic.com: Is your child ready?
Ask yourself these questions:
Does your child seem interested in the potty chair or toilet, or in wearing underwear?
Can your child understand and follow basic directions?
Can your child ask simple questions?
Does your child stay dry for periods of two hours or longer during the day? Does he or she wake from naps dry?
Does your child have fairly predictable bowel movements?
Does your child tell you when he or she needs to potty or poop?
Is your child uncomfortable in wet or dirty diapers?
Can your child pull down his or her pants and pull them up again?

Try potty training rewards. This worked great for our son. He loved pushing the audio push button hearing he is a Big Boy and opening a door to find a chocolate surprise. He really became involved. He was peeing and pooping in his potty within a week. Have a look and see if this would work for you. www.pottytrainingrewards.com

My son was doing really well potty learning...until my husband scared him one day. Now we're back to the beginning. Grr... but at 21 months, I can't complain one way or the other.

I feel your pain Tim. My five-year-old was up 9 times last night-Yes, the 5-yr-old! Argggh!

My kids all learned to use the potty in a span of about two weeks. My "method" was waiting until they were ready to do it on their own, which meant they were each about 3. But once it "clicked," it was super easy on all of us.

Sleep? What's that? Is 21 months too young to be getting his 2-year molars, because dang my kid is a drooling, non-stop nursing machine again! LOL! obviously, I need to go look that up!

Maria, My son is 19 months old and he has all of his two year molars. It happened about a month ago! I don't know what's normal.

this is going to sound like a rant perhaps, but I wish people would clarify if their child is potty-trained or if they themselves are trained to anticipate and notice cues.

I talk to parents all the time that boast about their twenty-whatever-month child being trained and it only took a weekend.... I've watched those parents hover and ask five-zillion times, "do you have to go potty?" I've seen them race to the bathroom and seen the children wet their pants when they weren't being constantly observed. (Just happened on my livingroom carpet last weekend) That's not "potty-trained" in my mind.

Anyway, I agree with Shannon - waiting is what worked for us. Once my 3-yr-old decided to do it, it was over with and I didn't have to follow him around watching for a pee-pee dance constantly. lol.

My son is 21 months and will tell you he needs to potty. Sometimes he says it as he is doing it, oops, or says he is done and then stands up and pees more, but it is all a part of learning. But I don't hover, and it isn't taking a weekend.
