In the last 30 years, the number of women age 40 to 44 with no children has doubled, from 10 percent to 20 percent. And those who are mothers have an average of 1.9 children each, more than one child fewer than women of the same age in 1976.
I was talking with a friend today about how big she pictures her family. Most of my friends have two or three kids and several plan on having four. But this survey shows exactly the opposite pattern! However, I do have at least one friend who did not have a child until she turned 40.
I am curious to know, how many kids do you have and how many do you want?

I have one child, 20 months, and he is the only one I am having. I might change my mind later, but I'm happy with our family being this size.
I have three kids and due tomorrow with number 4. We are sticking with four. I think part of the having fewer kids has to do with women having them later in life. They have a hard time conceiving and less time to conceive in.
I have no children and no plans to have any in the future.
I have two kids, a thirteen and a fourteen year old. Sometimes I see a baby and think "awww... I want one." But, I had my kids when I was pretty young (I'm 36 now) and was able to stay home with them for several years. I don't think we could afford to do that now and I can't imagine having a baby only to put him/her in daycare full-time. So I'm thinking we are done.
All of my friends also seem to be stopping at two. I think that's largely due to finances, too, and not wanting to "start over." (there's a certain freedom when your kid can get up, and get himself bowl of cereal on Saturday mornings!)
We do not have children now, but plan to have 1 in the future. I am 30 (soon to be 31 - oh my) & this is the way my husband and I planned it :)
I Have 4 kids. Ages 12, 4, 2, and 1 and I an 32 years old and I am lucky I get to stay home with my kids....
I have one child, 17 months and I am 28. My husband and I had always planned on only having one. Maybe things will change in a couple years but at this point we are a small happy family.
My wife & I obviously buck the trend. Five kids - 8, 6, 5, 2 and newborn.
I have 6 children. I always wanted 10, but not sure that is going to happen now, with some of my health issues. I love the interactions of my 6, though- I'm happy without another 4 if that's God's plan!
Isn't it wild how different we all feel about the number of kids? I just think it's amazing and interesting. Wow to 10 kids Theresa! And congratulations to the anonymous who is having a baby this week! KID-five kids under eight! That's amazing too!
We have 2 daughters; 4 1/2 yrs and 1 year. I kinda want another one but I am pretty sure we are done (I am 35). I love babies but it's the 'starting over' thing that has me convinced to stop. This 3-4 year old stage is lasting FOREVER and not sure I can do it TWO more times!! :)
