Valentine's Day Fears

I heard on "The View" this morning that getting Valentines in grade school is a big deal. The hosts were talking about how the "cool" girls will get a bag full and other girls won't get any. That is a horrible thought.

My son is only 4-years-old, so the teachers make sure everyone in the class gets a Valentine. Should teachers continue to regulate this activity as kids get older? Can they regulate it? I would think at some point kids would just start giving their Valentines to anyone they want, no matter what the teacher said.

What are your thoughts on Valentine's Day fears for kids? Does this happen at your child's school?

At my kids' school they have to bring one for everyone. We've never had a problem. And I think with the way they pass them out, walking around the room and dropping them in, it would be pretty apparent if a child was skipping people to be unkind.

Now birthday party invitations, that's a whole other problem. I know the policy is not to hand them out at school, but this gets ignored all the time and does lead to hurt feelings.

Jennifer,
That is a good point about birthdays. If there are 20 kids in the class, most of us can't afford to invite all of them. That will be really hard. I think sending them in the mail would be the best bet, but you would have to get the kid's home addresses somehow. That might be challenging. Anyone have any suggestions on how to do this without hurting kids' feelings?

My children attend a school district preschool at one school and elementary school at another school in the same district and at both schools the children are required to give a valentine to each child in the class if they choose to give them out.

Our elementary school does not allow you to bring birthday party invites to school unless you bring one for the entire class. The PTO publishes a school wide directory every year (you have you to give permission to be listed and almost every family does) and if you want to only invite certain friends from your class you are required to use this directory and mail the friend the invitation at their home.

FBI is warning: Do NOT open Valentines ecards. Botnet spammers are using them to infect computers with the Storm Worm.
