Teens Abusing Drugs

This study doesn't say what drugs they are using, but more 8th graders are using drugs. Who would give a 13 year old drugs? That's so wrong. It just makes me mad. Are their parents on drugs? If more youth are living in poverty, how are they paying for drugs? It's just not right.

FROM NBC: The teen birth rate declined for the second straight year -- but more and more middle schoolers are turning to drugs. Those findings are from a new federal report on the well-being of the nation's youth.

The report also shows premature births were down slightly... along with fewer high school seniors binge drinking. But a higher proportion of 8th graders used illegal drugs -- from 8-percent in 2009 to 10-percent last year. and the percentage of kids and teens living in poverty rose from 19-percent in 2008 to 21-percent in 2009. One other interesting finding -- the average math score for 8th and 12th graders rose by at least 2 points.

Traffic pollution and kid's health

Children exposed to highway pollution have a higher prevalence of asthma, wheezing, eczema and hay fever symptoms compared to children who aren't exposed. A UK academic wants to see a nationwide study on the impact of pollution on kids' health after looking at the research that is already available. The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood found air pollution causes two million premature deaths worldwide per year.

I actually live next to a farm. So I am more worried about pesticides than pollution from vehicles. I don't know what to think about this research, but it does make sense. Do your kids have asthma?

Here's more on kids and pollution from Science Daily

Teens on a diet

The obesity epidemic could be causing more eating disorders. And those eating disorders could last for ten years or longer. It's a scary balancing act between making sure your kids understand being heavy is bad for their health, but not bad enough for them to start binging and purging.

FROM NBC: Teens who diet and develop extreme eating behaviors are likely to continue into young adulthood and beyond.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota say data from over two-thousand young men and women shows harmful eating behaviors -- like bingeing or purging -- is not just a phase in most cases. In fact, teens who engaged in these dangerous behaviors during adolescence were still at an increased risk for the same problems 10 years later.

Autism and Anti-depressants

If you suffer from depression and you are trying to get pregnant, you better wait until you've been off your anti-depressants for a year. It's not an official recommendation, it just makes sense based on the most recent findings that connect a mom's anti-depressant use to an increase in children with autism.

FROM ABC: News of a widely-used class of drugs --and a growing problem among children.

New research suggests a possible link between some anti-depressants taken by expectant mothers-- and childhood autism.

Out of four million children born each year in the United States, about 36-thousand five hundred will be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. For an article in the Archives of General Psychiatry, the authors reviewed the medical records of over 16-hundred children and their mothers in California.

298 of the kids had been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The authors found that six point seven per cent of those children's mothers had taken a class of drugs called SSRI anti-depressants in the year before they had their babies.

By contrast, three point three per cent of mothers with non-ASD children had taken the same drugs. So a pregnant woman's use of SSRI anti-depressants was associated with a two-fold increase in the risk of autism spectrum disorder in her child.

Still, the authors say less than three per cent of ASD cases might be attributed to anti-depressants.

Snd they say these findings clearly should be considered preliminary pending more research and that pregnant women should not stop taking anti- depressants without their doctors' advice.

Smoking During Pregnancy

I think most people know it's dangerous for the baby's health if you smoke while pregnant. It can cause the baby to die or be born prematurely or have lung problems later in life. The list goes on and on. Don't even have one cigarette while you're pregnant. It's not worth a few minutes of nicotine. This WebMD article looks at ways to stop the habit while you're pregnant. The NBC article talks about a new problem that stems from women smoking while they're pregnant.

WebMD on Risks of Smoking while Pregnant

FROM NBC:Women who smoke during their pregnancy may negatively affect their children's cholesterol levels. Australian researchers discovered that by the age of eight, children born to mothers who smoked while expecting had lower levels of HDL or 'good' cholesterol .... when compared to kids of non-smoking moms.

The effect was the same regardless of the child's exposure to smoke after birth, indicating the damage is done in the womb. Researchers say even at a young age, low levels of HDL cholesterol could cause a serious impact on health later in life.
In fact, they estimate these children could have a 10 to 15-percent higher risk for coronary heart disease in adulthood.
