I have talked to parents of kids who have gotten whooping cough. It is really scary. If you want your kids immunized, don't put it off because you're too busy. It is just not worth it.
FROM NBC: Cases of whooping cough spiked in 2010 -- one of the worst years on record. Most infants receive the whooping cough vaccine -- which experts say is highly effective.
Yet many teens and adults may not be fully immunized because a vaccine for that age group was licensed just 6 years ago, in 2005. Last year, there were more than 21-thousand cases of whooping cough in the u-s, according to statistics from the centers for disease control. 26 people died.
The CDC's advisory committee on immunization practices now recommends the vaccine for all adults who spend time around babies who are too young for the shot.

A Cough that threatens a newborn's life
A local grandmother called me asking if I could run a story about her granddaughter on NewsAnchorMom.com. She is so upset about what happened to the little baby, she wants to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else. He granddaughter got a cold the first few weeks of life. That cold kept getting worse and worse. The baby was taken to the pediatrician every day for at least a week. She was diagnosed with acid reflux. Then Sofie Hicks turned blue and stopped breathing. Sofie had the life threatening virus pertussis. It's becoming more common for newborns to get it.
This video explains why.
Dr. Christison recommends pregnant women get the pertussis vaccine after they give birth if they haven't had it in the last 5-10 years.
