If I were rich, I would store the cord blood and the teeth! Why not? But I have way too many expenses to even consider it at this point. However, if there were a genetic disease in my family that could benefit from stem cells, I may feel differently. Have any of you banked your cord blood for future use? What about your kid's teeth? I do want to donate the baby's cord blood. I still need to figure out how to set that up. I hear it has be done ahead of time around here.
FROM NBC: Stem cells were discovered in baby teeth six years ago.. And in the same way some families choose to store umbilical cord blood.. Some parents are now paying to store their child's teeth at stem cell banks. The question is should you bank.. Or are you being taken to the bank? 12 year old Abi McGlone is missing a few baby teeth. Abi "Right here and here and right here." Her parents are keeping track of each one, not for the tooth fairy, but for something potentially much more important. Abi has Type one diabetes, and her Parents hope that one day - someday - stem cells from baby teeth might unlock A cure. The idea isn't new. For a few years... many new moms and dads have been Banking the blood found in umbilical cords... right after their baby's birth. But it's costly... And not every frazzled new mom took the leap. Moms like maria Mcglone, for whom health concerns about her daughter seemed a far off worry... until Abi's diabetes diagnoses when she was just 3. Sot Maria Mcglone "Neither of us knew anything about diabetes, and had no clue that it was such a huge life long change." Having missed the opportunity to bank Abi's cord blood... her parents are hopeful about stem cells gathered from those baby teeth. Dr. Pamela Robey is a researcher at the National Inst of Health. In 2003 her team discovered that nestled in the pulp of baby teeth are a few of those same stem cells - building blocks that have the potential to develop into many different parts of the body. Pamela Robey/National Institutes of Health"From that single baby tooth, we can isolate between 10 and 20 stem cells. The number is very small, but they're very powerful in how they can divide." But there's a difference. Unlike stem cells from cord blood, baby teeth stem Cells so far have only been tested in animals. Dr. Robey"In terms of using dental pulp stem cells, it's, it's too early to say how, uh,effective they would be in applications outside of the mouth." Nevertheless, some companies see this emerging research as an opportunity, Running ads like these... Which seem promising. Nat – a Abi's parents paid to the national dental pulp lab, one of a handful of us Tooth cell banks... With a kit used to collect abi's teeth. They will continue To pay $125 a year to keep them frozen, price that's half of what it costs for Cord blood collection. Researchers say Right now there is not sufficient science to recommend saving and banking these teeth.. But there is plenty of evidence that someday the stem cells will become significant in helping to find cures for different diseases.

Are Pets Dangerous to Kids?
Does having a dog in the house put your child at risk?
This is pretty scary. The dog almost killed the baby. I still don't think it's a bad idea to have a dog and a baby. I just think I would make sure the dog couldn't get to the baby. I would shut the baby's door when he's sleeping. We don't have a dog so this isn't a big concern for me, but a lot of people do. Will this story make you think twice about leaving Fido in the room with your kids?
FROM ABC: A five–day old infant is in critical condition today after being snatched from his crib by the family dog...and carried into the woods. While the baby sustained serious injuries, his parents say this was *not* a vicious dog attack. ABCs Andrea Canning has more on whether or not having a dog in the house puts your child at risk. It's an unimaginable family tragedy.
Michael Smith and his wife had just brought home their newborn baby son A.J. Less than 24 hours later, Smith's wife Chrissie went to check on the baby -but A.J. wasn't in his crib. They began a frantic search of the house and the surrounding woods. Ten minutes later Smith found Dakota with A.J. in her mouth.
(SOT SHERIFF) "The child was found approximately 150 yards from the home in a wooded area." AJ SUFFERED MULTIPLE INTERNAL INJURIES A CRACKED SKULL AND TWO PUNCTURED LUNGS- ALL TO A BABY BORN 3 WEEKS EARLY. DAKOTA IS A MIXED BREED NATIVE AMERICAN DOG - SMITH HAS HAD HER FOR 4 YEARS AND SAYS HE Completely TRUSTED HER. SHE WAS PART OF THE FAMILY.
IN THIS CASE THE FAMILY BELIEVES THE DOG THOUGHT THE BABY WAS A DOLL ..AND WANTED TO PLAY WITH IT.. BUT EXPERTS SAY ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASONS A PET MAY TURN ON A NEW BABY IS OUT OF FEAR. (SOT EXPERT: DR KAT MILLER, ASPCA:)yes a baby could be something that a dog fears if it feels necessary it feels trapped, it feels cornered, it could possibly try to drive the baby away with aggression.
WE'VE SEEN THIS KIND OF AGGRESSION BEFORE...LAST YEAR AN 8 MONTH OLD BOY WAS KILLED AT HOME BY A DOBERMAN IN THIS NEW YORK APARTMENT. IN THIS SAN FRANCISCO CASE, IN HIS OWN LIVING ROOM, A NINE MONTH OLD WAS BIT IN THE FACE AND NECK BY THE FAMILY DOG, A BOXER. SOT DR KAT MILLER, ASPCA: Dogs and cats no matter how friendly and social they are still have big teeth keep your baby safe by separating completely your dog and your baby when u are not immediately there to supervise
THANKFULLY BABY A.J. SURVIVED THIS ATTACK..BUT FOR SMITH - KNOWING HE COULD HAVE DONE MORE TO PROTECT HIS SON IS A REGRET HE SAYS HE WILL LIVE WITH FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE.

Should Labor be Induced?
This is bound to be a touchy subject. Some people are all for induction (at 39 weeks) and some are very much against it. If it's not necessary, why do it? Some do it for convenience, others because they are simply miserable and can't wait another day. I didn't realize doctors could induce prior to 39 weeks when there is no medical reason to do so. Were any of your babies induced? Why or why not?
FROM ABC: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has issued new guidelines about labor induction during pregnancy. Unless an urgent medical situation is present, women now need to be at least 39 weeks along before they should be induced.
Labor usually starts on its own but may be induced if the health of the mom or baby is at risk. In total, labor is induced in about 20% of pregnancies in the US.
Many of these inductions are non-urgent situations. The biggest change in the new guidelines addresses these non-urgent situations. The previous guidelines had found it all right for induction to take place as long as the baby was full term, or at least 37 weeks.
The NEW recommendations state that the gestational age of the baby
needs to be at least 39 weeks before induction should proceed. This is for the health of the baby - to give the baby more time to grow in the womb.
The guidelines also now warn doctors against using the drug Misoprostol to induce labor in women who have had a prior cesarean delivery, because of the possibility of harm to both the mother and
baby.

Eating the Placenta
In an effort to stay unbiased, I will just say that the thought of eating my child's placenta makes me feel ill. I guess this is a big thing in some cultures so I don't want to offend anyone. However, it is a little shocking to me. I thought I was reading the story wrong the first time around.
FROM NBC: After a baby is delivered, the placenta is usually destroyed....considered But some women believe there are benefits to ingesting their own placentas...now available in capsule form. Diana Gonzalez talks to the women who make and take them.
Khloe Stoute was born on the 4th of July.... 4 days later her dad took this Video of Naeemah Jones preparing the placenta Naeemah Jones/Placenta Encapsulation "Clean it, steam it, put it in the dehydrator until it's crispy. I grind it up in my bullet." Khloe's mom Natasha now takes her own placenta in capsule form to prevent the postpartum blues she experienced after her first child
Natasha Stoute/New Mom "I just felt very overwhelmed anxious and emotional" Natasha hasn't been taking the placenta pills long enough to feel any difference, but Ahuva Gamliel swears by them. Ahuva Gamliel/New Mom "I didn't have any depression after the baby was born the nutrients helped to balance my hormones and make me feel good"
When Julie O Sullivan was pregnant with Chrystal and decided to try placenta pills she got this reaction... "That's so gross." After giving birth she took her placenta capsules for 3 weeks. Julie O'Sullivan/New Mom "I felt the bleeding was minimal and it helped with lactation"
Naeemah Jones is a doula who was certified on line as a placenta encapsulation specialist . She charges an average of 175 dollars. Naeemah Jones/Placenta Encapsulation "When I go into the homes I have a suitcase of encapsulation equipment." Natasha had a c-section at Memorial Regional. "I had to sign a release form and they put it in a bucket and were like here's your placenta there you go." Not standard procedure at every hospital.
Diana Gonzalez/Reporter"A spokesperson from South Miami Hospital told me all hospitals in the baptist health system have a policy not to give women their placentas for infection control reasons."
What about the claims that women who take placenta capsules have fewer emotional issues, more energy and a faster recovery? No comment from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists or the Endocrine Society and the state does not regulate the personal service Naeemah provides. Naeemah Jones/Placenta Encapsulation "It's like my clients hire me as a chef I'm just in there cooking in their kitchen so they have nothing to say about that" While it seems very natural to these moms... for many women its a tough concept to swallow.
What do you think about this? Has anyone heard of this or known anyone who has eaten the placenta?

Car Seat Story
My husband and I recently bought a new convertible car seat for our 9 month old daughter. The installation did not go well at all. We remembered the car seat safety reps from children's Hospital and my husband was able to take the car seat there to be installed. They even set up appointments to accommodate our work schedules. They can install the seat with seat belt or the LATCH system and will be sure its level, secure, etc. Can you post a reminder to parents that this service exists? I feel so much safer knowing that a professional installed my daughters car seat. The best part...its free!
Thanks!
Jessica
(First, I just want to point out the harnesses on the baby in this picture are way to high. They should be adjusted to fit right above her shoulders and this doesn't look like a 5 point harness! It's not surprising more than 90% of car seats are installed wrong!)
For information about the Illinois SAFE KIDS Coalition (Illinois) or the Mobile Car Seat Check Up Van, call the Illinois Department of Public Health at 217-782-3300.
safekids.org has a list of the next events scheduled.
If you can't make it to a scheduled event, call the Children's Hospital of Illinois in Peoria to set up a time. 309-671-4813
If you see someone with a child who is not restrained appropriately, take down the license plate and call this number: 888-800-2642
AAA says car seats with a manufacturer's date before 2002 are too old to be safely used. My pumpkin seat from my first son was bought in 2003 and it has been used by four kids. That makes me a little nervous. My neighbor has one that is only 2 years old and she only used it for one child. So I am going to use that one instead! It has a really cushy headrest too. Hopefully this baby won't get plagiocephaly (flat spot.)
Fortunately, my husband went through the two day training to learn how to properly install a car seat. He works for AAA. He said there was a huge room with hundreds of different kinds of seats and they learned the best way to make each brand fit in different vehicles. It is quite a process!
Here's a better picture of a kid in a 5-point harness with the shoulder straps in the right place. Although he is forward facing and as we have mentioned, the AAP is now recommending kids stay rear facing until over 2-years old.

8 Months
This month seems to be a little better for some reason. I am still having contractions, but they have not continued to increase as I expected.
The baby is still butt first so that is making me nervous, but my doctor says he has plenty of time to turn around. I feel like he is so packed in there right now it would be hard for him to turn around. I guess I am wrong. I have been looking into a version and the pluses and minuses. I hope I don't have to do that! My labors have always been fast and so has the recovery. I usually feel fine by the next day. I really don't want to have surgery this time. I will wait another month to freak out about that possibility!
The baby's room is almost complete. I am still missing a few things that are hidden in the basement, but I hope to find them before he comes. I keep buying baby clothes, which is so silly because I have plenty. It's hard not to buy for a new baby!
7-8 more weeks until I am up all night with a newborn. Am I ready? Of course not! Hopefully I will be soon!
